What does it cost to study in the UK?

The British Council gives broad international tuition ranges of £11,400–£38,000 for undergraduate study and £9,000–£30,000 for postgraduate study. These are orientation figures, not fee caps or quotes; individual programmes can cost more. Use the dated university examples below for a more specific starting point.

Include every taught year, a foundation or pre-sessional course if required, and placement-year charges. Ask about annual increases and what the deposit is credited against.

2. Living costs for your stay

The British Council estimates £1,300–£1,400 per month in London and £900–£1,300 elsewhere for a student without dependants. These are broad guides; use current accommodation quotes and your own needs.

Compare offers before paying a deposit

  • Is this the correct campus, qualification, mode and intake?
  • Is the amount annual or total, and can it increase?
  • What must you pay before CAS, enrolment and each instalment date?
  • What are the refund conditions for withdrawal or a visa refusal?
  • Is the scholarship confirmed, and which fees does it cover?
  • How many months does your housing contract cover, including any summer or dissertation period?

Your questions, answered

Are international tuition fees annual or for the whole degree?

Either basis may be used. Undergraduate pages often quote an academic-year fee, while a full-time master’s may show a programme fee. Read the exact intake’s fee schedule, including annual increases, foundation study and placement years.

Is the lowest tuition fee the cheapest study option?

Not necessarily. Compare tuition plus accommodation, living costs and other expenses over the full study period. A longer course or placement year can cost more overall even if its annual tuition is lower.
