How to explain employment gaps on your CV

How to label UK career breaks honestly, what not to invent, and when a gap does not need a story.

CourseToJob guide · content date . Tool instructions reflect the CourseToJob service. Editorial method.

Quick answer

Label real breaks in one honest line (care, health, redundancy, study, travel) and put proof of recent capability next to them. Do not invent freelance work. Skip a long essay on the CV — save detail for the form or interview. Skip this page if your “gap” is three weeks between jobs.

Other situations: Not legal advice. Disability, maternity and health disclosures are your choice; UK equality law exists, but this page will not tell you what to disclose. If you need advice, use ACAS or a qualified adviser.

How should you label a career break on the CV?

One line in the timeline: “Career break — caring for a family member, 2023–2024” or “Redundancy, then professional development”. Add a single proof if you have it (a course, volunteering, a contract). Do not write a paragraph of justification. Do not leave a two-year hole with no label.

ACAS’s hiring guidance (checked 13 August 2026) is about what employers should ask, not what you must volunteer. You still control health and caring detail. A short true label beats a blank.

What proof helps beside a gap?

Recent, checkable activity: a named course with dates, volunteering with a real organisation, a short contract, a portfolio URL. “Kept busy” is not proof. If there is no proof, the honest line still beats fiction. We would rather publish “we do not have a project to list” than a fake consultancy.

Students returning after a break can lean on student CV structure. Career changers: career change.

How do you handle redundancy?

Treat it as a fact, not a stain. End date, then the next activity. You do not owe a novel about the employer’s restructure. If you used the time for a certification, name it. If you did not, the gap line is enough until interview.

Keep the last role’s bullets strong. The gap is not the story; the evidence before and after is.

When should you say nothing on the CV?

When the break is short, already obvious from month dates, or the detail is medical and you prefer to discuss it later. A CV is not a clinic form. If a reader needs the date range, they have it. Save sensitive context for a conversation you choose.

What do honest gap labels look like?

One line, month and year, a true category, optional one proof. You do not owe a medical essay. You do not owe a novel about a restructure. You do owe a timeline a reader can follow. A two-year hole with no label invites the worst story. A one-line true label invites a normal interview question.

ACAS hiring guidance (checked 13 August 2026) is about what employers should ask, not what you must volunteer. Health and disability disclosure remains your choice. This page is not legal advice.

How much should you prepare to say in interview?

One calm sentence that matches the CV line, plus what you can do now. Do not apologise for caring, illness or redundancy. Do not overshare medical detail. Do not contradict the dates on the page. If you studied or volunteered, name it once. Then steer to recent proof. The gap is context; the job is the subject.

Frequently asked questions

Should I hide a gap by stretching dates?

No. Month-and-year dates that overlap a job you did not have are a lie. Interviewers check. A one-line true gap is safer than a fake consultancy.

Do I need to explain a three-month gap?

Usually no. Month-level dates already show it. Explain at interview if asked. Explain on the CV when the gap is long enough that a reader will assume the worst without a label.

Should I call a gap “freelance” if I was not working?

No. Freelance is a job with clients, dates and usually invoices. A blank year labelled freelance is a lie that collapses when someone asks for a client name. Use a true label (care, health, redundancy, study, travel) or a short unexplained date range if the break is brief. Honesty is shorter than a fake consultancy.
