How to write a CV for NHS Jobs and Trac

What to upload to NHS Jobs and Trac, which sections the form already asks, and when a two-page CV still matters. Desk-researched August 2026.

Quick answer

Treat NHS Jobs and Trac as a form first and a file second. Mirror the person specification with evidence you can defend. Skip a designed CV. Skip this page if you are not applying through NHS Jobs, Trac or a trust portal — use the flagship UK CV guide instead.

Other situations: Skip if you are applying to a private clinic that asked for a designed PDF, or to a US hospital using a resume. This page is NHS Jobs / Trac / trust portals in the UK. PIN and right-to-work rules outrank layout advice.

Why is the form more important than the PDF?

Read the job description and person specification first. Use the supporting information fields to show evidence against the stated requirements. Follow the portal’s instructions about additional documents rather than assuming every vacancy needs a CV upload.

Start with NHS Jobs application advice and the NHSBSA applicant help pages. The employer decides the application and assessment requirements.

How do you map a person specification without stuffing?

Copy each essential criterion into a row. Add one proof with a number, a setting, and a date. Check whether it is essential or desirable. Be clear about any qualification or training still in progress. Repeating “excellent communication” six times is visible. One handover example with a caseload is evidence.

Multidisciplinary workingGreat communicatorNamed meeting, caseload, one outcome

Put the same proofs on the CV in the latest role, not as a keyword cloud. Nurse example: nurse CV.

What file should you upload?

A single-column, A4, two-page (or one if you are early career) PDF with standard headings and selectable text. No photo, no skill bars, no tables as layout. If the portal also asks you to type jobs again, type them. Do not assume the parse will fill the form.

Our PDF download uses selectable text in a consistent single-column layout. If select-all on the file copies nothing, do not upload it. Classic or Professional templates are the safe default. Sidebar is labelled medium risk on purpose.

File name: Firstname-Surname-NHS-role.pdf. Not final-FINAL3.pdf.

Builder: CV builder. Templates: template notes.

What should you leave off an NHS CV?

Photo, date of birth, marital status, National Insurance number, a full home address, “references on request”, and every rotation from 1998 unless it is the only proof of a required skill. Hobbies that are not occupationally relevant. A personal statement that could fit any band.

Lead with registration, band or student status, and setting (ward, community, theatre, primary care). Then skills the spec named. Then jobs with caseload numbers you can defend. Education can follow experience once you are registered.

Healthcare assistant and student roles are different documents. Do not borrow a band 6 title. Examples hub: CV examples.

Is Trac the same as NHS Jobs?

They are related hiring kit used by many trusts, not one consumer brand you can “beat”. Advice is the same: extractable text, spec evidence, no photo. If a trust uses a different portal, follow that portal’s upload rules. Do not send a Canva infographic because a LinkedIn post said ATS hates Word.

If the advert is on NHS Jobs and redirects to a trust site, complete every box. Ghosting a mandatory field is a real rejection. A 94 formatting score on a builder is not.

Where do right-to-work and DBS sit?

On the form, in the boxes they labelled. The CV can say “eligible to work in the UK” if the advert asked and it is true. Do not attach passport scans to a CV PDF. DBS numbers are not decoration. Follow the vacancy. This is not legal advice.

If you are an international graduate, say visa status only where asked. Do not hide a restriction in a footer. Do not invent a status. Careers service at your university will beat a builder’s phrase library here.

Frequently asked questions

Does NHS Jobs use an ATS that auto-rejects CVs?

Application forms and selection processes vary by employer. Follow the vacancy instructions and support the person specification with real examples. This website has not tested or reverse-engineered NHS Jobs or Trac selection systems.

Should the NHS CV repeat the application form?

Yes in the skills the spec names, no as a paste of the whole form. The panel often prints both. Use the CV for dates, PIN, and three proofs. Use the supporting information box for the person-specification table. Do not leave the CV empty because the form exists.

Do I put a photo or NMC PIN on an NHS CV?

No photo for almost every NHS vacancy. Yes to registration status in line one if the role requires it — NMC PIN, HCPC, GPhC — and the expiry or “applied for” if that is true. Inventing a PIN is a regulator problem, not a style problem.

Can I use a sidebar template on Trac?

You can, and some parsers will scramble the rail. Use a single column for NHS Jobs and Trac. If a hiring manager later asks for a designed PDF for a conference pack, that is a different file. Do not let the conference file become the portal file. Medium-risk templates are labelled on this site for that reason.
