Other situations: Not for US resumes, where one page is still the common early-career default, or for academic CVs that must list publications in full.
Why is two pages the UK default?
Hiring teams here are used to scanning two A4 sides. Civil Service and many graduate schemes say two pages outright. A third page of duties adds no decision value. A cramped one-page professional CV hides evidence. Match the convention unless the advert overrides it.
Make the most relevant information easy to find. Reader attention varies; a timing statistic is not a rule for every employer.
Who should use a one-page CV?
School leavers, many first-job students, and career changers whose relevant evidence is short. If you can fit the proof in 400–500 words without 9pt type, one page is cleaner. If you are deleting a quantified win to keep the length, you chose the wrong length.

Who should use two pages?
Anyone with more than a couple of relevant roles, most professionals past year three, and anyone applying to UK public sector or NHS vacancies that expect two pages. Put the strongest evidence on page one. Page two is for earlier roles, extra projects and education detail.
Do not waste page two on “references available on request” or a second personal statement. See structure.
When is a longer CV justified?
Academic, research, medical consultant-style applications, and some senior portfolios where the committee asked for publications, grants or a full project list. If nobody asked, do not send four pages of every contract since 1998. Summarise older work.

How long should the CV be at each career stage?

National Careers Service CV-section guidance still frames the file as aimed at a kind of job, not a life story (checked 13 August 2026). Length is how much proof that job needs, not a personality test.
How do you cut a CV that has spilled onto page three?
Delete duties that duplicate the job title, collapse early roles to one line, drop “references available on request”, and move publications to a link unless the field needs them on the page. Do not shrink margins to 0.4cm. Do not hide bullets in a sidebar to fake two pages — that is how parses fail.
- Print both pages. Anything you cannot defend in interview goes.
- Keep three to six bullets on the latest role; two to four on the one before; one to two after that.
- Education: degree line plus relevant modules. GCSEs become one summary line.
- If you still overflow, you need two honest pages or a tighter target job — not 8pt Calibri.
