What is your greatest weakness? Interview answers

How to answer what is your greatest weakness in a UK interview. A real weakness, a fix you can prove, and answers to skip. Not a hire guarantee.

CourseToJob guide · content date . Tool instructions reflect the CourseToJob service. Editorial method.

Quick answer

Answer “what is your greatest weakness” with a real work weakness, a change you made, and the current state. Skip “I am a perfectionist” and “I work too hard”. Skip a safety-critical confession you have not been advised to give. This is not a script that gets you hired.

Other situations: Not a guarantee of an offer. Not coaching for a regulated fitness-to-practise hearing. Not a way to hide a ban, a struck-off status, or a right-to-work problem. If the weakness is clinical, legal or safety-critical, get advice from a union or professional body before you improvise.

What is your greatest weakness — what are they actually asking?

They are asking whether you can see a real limit, whether you have changed anything, and whether you will be a risk in this role. They are not asking for a confession that wrecks the hire, and they are not asking for a joke. A polished non-answer fails the test as clearly as a dangerous one.

UK interviewers in corporates, the NHS, councils and graduate schemes have all heard the perfectionism line. Treat the question as a short case study, not as branding. If the panel uses Success Profiles or a person specification, they may already have a “changing and improving” or “self-awareness” behaviour. Answer in that shape.

This is desk-researched interview method, 22 August 2026. It is not a psychologist’s assessment and not a promise you will get the job.

How should you answer what is your greatest weakness?

Name the weakness in one sentence. Give one example with enough scope to be real. Say what you changed (a habit, a course, a checklist). Say how it looks now, without claiming you are cured. Then stop. If you cannot name a change, you do not have an answer yet — you have a complaint.

BeatJobFail state
Name itA work behaviour, not a medical label you do not want on file“I have no weaknesses”
ExampleOne story with time and consequenceA vague “sometimes I…”
ChangeA rule, course, or peer check you actually use“I am working on it” with no method
NowWhat a colleague would see this month“I am now perfect at it”

Spoken length: 45–90 seconds. If you need notes, write four bullets, not a script you will read.

What is a bad greatest-weakness answer?

A bad answer is a humble-brag, a core-skill hole, or a dump of personal medical detail they did not ask for. “I work too hard”, “I am too honest”, and “I am a perfectionist” with no cost are in this bin. So is “I am bad at Excel” when the advert is a spreadsheet job.

  • No weakness that is the essential criterion.
  • No joke that dodges the question.
  • No attack on a previous manager as your “weakness”.
  • No reading a paragraph you copied from a US listicle.

If you need written proof on the file instead, that is the CV: how to write a CV.

What is a good greatest-weakness example for a professional job?

Pick a true limit that is not the job’s engine. Delegation, saying no to extra scope, writing too little before you build, avoiding conflict until it is late — these can work if the story is yours. Invented metrics are a defect. If you cannot defend the example, do not say it.

Pattern (rewrite every fact): “I used to take work back off people because it was faster that day. In 2024 that blocked a junior on a four-week pack. I now set a review slot instead of taking the file. The last pack shipped with their name on it and I still hit the Friday deadline.” That is a weakness answer. “I care too much about quality” is not.

Match the example to the vacancy. A product role can talk about shipping unfinished drafts. A finance role can talk about asking for a second pair of eyes on a judgement. Do not swap them if the story would be false.

How do graduates answer greatest weakness with little work history?

Use a real study, placement or society example. “I left group work until the night before” plus the planner you now use is better than a fake corporate story. Do not borrow a ward or a P&L you never touched. Panels can tell. Predicted grades belong on the CV, not in this answer.

Graduate schemes often score behaviours. Keep the weakness out of the essential academic requirement they already filtered. More file work: graduate CV tips. Form boxes: graduate scheme vs form.

How do NHS and Civil Service interviews treat a weakness?

They want a reflective example you can stand up, not a brand slogan. If the role is clinical or operationally sensitive, do not volunteer a weakness that sounds like an undeclared risk. Use a process weakness (documentation late, asking for help late) and the checklist you now follow. Map it to their behaviour if they named one.

NHS Jobs and Civil Service forms already collected the evidence. The interview is often a second pass on the same behaviours. Repeat the structure, not a new personality. Portal notes: NHS Jobs CV, Civil Service Jobs CV.

Should you mention a real clinical, legal or safety weakness?

Only with advice if it touches fitness to practise, a ban, or a live investigation. An interview is not a tribunal. Do not hide a fact they will find on a check. Do not dump a diagnosis they did not ask for. This page will not choose that disclosure for you.

Unions, defence organisations and professional bodies exist for this. A CV builder blog is the wrong representative. If the issue is a gap on the file, label the gap honestly instead of turning it into a cute weakness: employment gaps.

Can you reuse the same greatest-weakness answer?

Reuse the weakness if it is still true. Change the example so it fits this panel. A career-change interview should use a proof from the old field that maps, not a copied tech story. If you hear yourself saying a number from a blog, stop and pick a fact you lived.

Write four bullets in your notes app. Do not memorise a 300-word speech. Cover letters stay separate — they are why this job, not a weakness essay: cover letter examples.

What if they ask for a strength and a weakness together?

Answer the strength with a proof from the CV, then the weakness with the formula on this page. Do not make the weakness the inverse of the strength (“I am too strategic”). That still sounds like a brand. Two different facts. Two short stories. Then stop and wait for the next question.

The strength should already be visible on the file. If it is not, fix the CV before the interview: builder.

Frequently asked questions

What is your greatest weakness — what should I say?

Say a real work weakness that is not the job’s core skill, then one example, then the habit or training you changed, then the current state. Keep it under a minute and a half. Do not say you have no weaknesses. Do not use “perfectionism” unless you can prove a specific cost and a specific fix.

Is “I am a perfectionist” a good greatest-weakness answer?

Almost never. Interviewers have heard it this week. It sounds like you are dodging. If you truly over-polish, name the cost (missed draft deadlines, blocked teammates) and the rule you now use (time-box, pair review). Without that, it is a slogan.

Can I use the same greatest-weakness answer for every interview?

You can reuse the weakness if it is still true. You must change the example so it fits this role. A teaching interview and a finance interview should not share a copied paragraph. If the weakness is the essential criterion, pick a different true one.

Should I put my greatest weakness on the CV?

No. The CV is evidence you can do the job. The interview is where they test judgement. A “weaknesses” heading on a UK CV looks like a US blog leftover. Put proof on the file. Save the weakness answer for the room.

How do NHS or Civil Service interviews handle this question?

They often want a behaviour example with situation, task, action, result — and a weakness that does not hide a fitness issue. Map to the person specification. Do not give a jokey brand answer. Do not invent a reflection you cannot stand up in a clinical or policy follow-up.

What if my real weakness is the job they advertised?

Then this vacancy is the wrong vacancy, or you need a different true weakness that is not the essential skill. Do not pretend. Do not apply and then confess you cannot do the core task. Skip the advert. That is cheaper than a first-week failure.

What if they ask for three weaknesses?

Give three short true ones, each with a one-line fix, and do not turn it into a therapy session. If you only have one prepared, say so and offer a second smaller example. Do not invent a third from a blog. Empty quantity is worse than one honest answer.
