What is a cover letter example?
A cover letter example is a worked pattern: why this vacancy, two checkable proofs, a practical close. It is not a biography and not a second CV. Use it to see length and tone. Then write from your evidence. If you cannot name two proofs, you are not ready to send a letter.
Search results labelled “cover letter examples” are often US one-pagers with a photo and a salary ask. UK default is different: no photo, no date of birth, one page, British spelling, and a named person only when the advert gives one. “Dear Sir/Madam” is a last resort, not a mark of polish.

How do you use a cover letter sample without copying it?
Copy the order of paragraphs, not the nouns. Replace every employer, tool, ward, town and figure with yours. Read the result aloud. If a line would still be true for a competitor, cut it. Sending our sample with leftover numbers is a lie and it reads as generic.
- Highlight two requirements on the advert you can prove.
- Write one sentence of fit that names this organisation — a product, a site, a rotation, a caseload type.
- Write two proof sentences with scope (people, money, volume, time).
- Close with notice or a start date you can actually keep.
- Delete any sentence that still contains a placeholder or a number from this page.
If step 2 is empty, skip the letter when it is optional and spend the hour on the CV.
What does a UK cover letter look like?
One page. Your name and email at the top, date, their name if known, then three short paragraphs. British spelling. No photo. No “To whom it may concern” if a hiring manager is named on the advert. Address “Hiring manager” when it is not. That is honest. Inventing a name is worse.
Paper letters still use a simple block layout. Email cover letters drop the postal header and start with the first paragraph after “Hello [Name]”. Portals often give you a box — that box is the letter. Do not also attach a second PDF unless they asked.
Length: about 250–400 words. Font: the same as the CV, 10–12pt. File name: firstname-lastname-role-cover-letter.pdf, not Letter_final_v7.pdf.
What is a good cover letter example if you have no experience?
Lead with the course, project or part-time proof that maps to the advert, not with an apology. One academic or project proof, one teamwork or reliability proof, one line on why this employer. Skip “I know I lack experience”. They can see the dates. The letter is for the evidence you do have.
Pattern (rewrite every noun): “I am applying for the junior analyst post because your team publishes the weekly occupancy pack I already used on my placement. In a 20-person student project I cleaned a 4,000-row sheet and presented the miss-rate to a tutor each Friday. I also ran Saturday shifts on a till — relevant to your weekend rota.” Then close with term dates.

What does a workable tech cover letter example include?
Name the stack they use, cite one shipped system with scale, and cite one collaboration proof. Skip “I have been passionate about code since childhood”. Skip listing twenty languages. Two proofs beat a biography. If you cannot name a system you touched, you are not ready to send the letter.
Pattern: “I am applying for the backend role because you run payments on Go. I spent 18 months on a Go service that handled a production load I can describe in interview, and I was on-call for that service. I also pair with data on weekly incident reviews — relevant to your platform rotation.” Then close with notice period.

What does an NHS or healthcare cover letter example need?
Registration status, the right setting (acute, community, care home), and one clinical or care proof with scope. Do not invent PIN numbers. Do not paste GDPR slogans. If you are pre-registration, say so in sentence one so they do not shortlist you for a registered-only post.
NHS Jobs often wants the person specification in the form, not a second letter. If they still ask for a supporting statement, map each essential criterion in order. A pretty letter that ignores the spec table is the wrong artefact.

What should a graduate cover letter example prove?
Why this scheme, not why any scheme. One academic proof, one teamwork or delivery proof from placement or society. Predicted or achieved grade belongs on the CV. The letter is for motivation that is specific enough to be checked — your Glasgow rotation, not “your prestigious programme”.
Assessors read hundreds of “I have always wanted to work for a market leader”. Name a rotation, a location, or a published value they actually use. If the scheme forbids a letter, put the stories in the competency boxes and stop.

How do career-change cover letter examples work?
The letter is where you say the change out loud so the CV timeline is not a puzzle. One paragraph on the bridge (course, volunteering, transferable scope), one on a proof from the old field that maps, one on why this employer. Do not hide the old job titles — they will see them.
Retail to operations: stock accuracy and rotas, not “customer experience lead” if that was not the title. Teaching to L&D: cohort size and assessment, not a rebranded classroom. What do retail, teaching and admin cover letter examples need?
They prove load, systems and trust: shifts, till, stock, class size, diaries, confidentiality. They do not need a childhood vocation story. Name the setting. Skip stack names you do not use. Skip “I am a people person” without a queue, a caseload or a complaint you resolved.
Retail pattern: why this shop, one proof of load, one proof of trust (cash, keys), close with hours you can work. Teaching: QTS or trainee status first, then one class or behaviour proof, one planning or safeguarding proof. Admin: why this team, diary or inbox scope, a deadline or confidentiality proof, notice period.

Should you send a cover letter as email or PDF?
Follow the advert. If they say attach a letter, send a one-page PDF with the CV. If they say apply on the portal, the box is the letter. If they say email the hiring manager, the email body is the letter — do not attach a third file they must open. Duplicate essays look like you ignored the brief.

When should you not send a cover letter?
Skip when the instructions say not to send one, when the portal has no box and the email is only “attach CV”, or when you would only paste the profile again. Spend the time tailoring page one of the CV. The free option — no letter — wins in those cases.
Also skip if you would have to invent a PIN, a stack or a grade. A missing letter is cleaner than a false one. Interview answers are a different artefact: what is your greatest weakness.
How should you store cover letter examples you have written?
Keep a master skeleton and a folder of sent letters named by employer and date. Do not keep one “final” file you overwrite. Do not store client or patient names in a sample you might paste later. If a letter still contains last week’s trust, you are one send from a reject.
