Small business ideas after leaving a UK job

Small business ideas for people leaving a UK job, based on skills you already have. What to test before you resign. Not a promise of profit.

CourseToJob guide · content date . Tool instructions reflect the CourseToJob service. Editorial method.

Quick answer

Pick a small business idea you can already evidence: a skill, a licence, a set of buyers who have paid or asked. Test one paid job before you resign if you can. Skip listicles that invent “hot” markets with no cost, tax or insurance. This is not a business plan and not a promise of profit.

Other situations: Not investment advice, not tax advice, not Companies House filing help, and not an FCA-authorised promotion. Skip this page if you want dropshipping fantasies, crypto tips, or a funded-startup pitch. Skip it if you need benefits or visa advice — use the official pages and a qualified adviser.

What small business ideas will this page give you?

Ideas that start from work you have already done: bookkeeping, tutoring, trades support, writing, care-adjacent admin you are allowed to do, specialist consulting in your old field. Not a ranked “top 50” with invented margins. If you cannot name a first customer type, you do not have an idea yet — you have a mood.

CourseToJob is a CV builder. We publish this page because people leave jobs and then ask what to do with the same evidence. We will not pretend we ran a market study of every UK high street. Desk-researched 22 August 2026. Official registrations live on GOV.UK. Companies House is a filing office, not a badge of quality.

If you still need a job rather than a firm, write the employed file first: how to write a CV.

Which small business ideas fit the skills you already have?

Map the last role’s proof to a buyer. If you reconciled ledgers, bookkeeping for trades is closer than “AI startup”. If you taught, tutoring is closer than a course marketplace you have never run. If you managed rotas, a small ops-admin service is closer than a café with no hospitality hours.

What small business ideas work as a UK sole trader?

Service ideas with low stock and a clear invoice: tutoring, writing, bookkeeping if you are competent, handyperson work if you are insured, specialist consulting. They fail when you under-price, skip invoices, or ignore tax. GOV.UK is the register. This page will not file for you.

Typical first steps people actually take (not a legal checklist): choose a trading name you can use, open a separate account if it helps you stay honest, write a one-page scope for the first job, agree a price, do the work, invoice, keep records. Self Assessment deadlines are official facts — look them up, do not trust a CV site’s memory.

Insurance: public liability and professional indemnity are common asks from clients. We will not quote a premium. Ask a broker.

Which small business ideas need a licence or insurance first?

Anything clinical, legal, gas, electrical, financial-advice, or care-regulated is not a weekend idea. If the old job needed a PIN, QTS, SRA number or Gas Safe ID, the new idea probably does too. Trading without that is not a “growth hack”. Skip the idea until the register says you can.

Food, alcohol, taxis, childcare and some waste work also have local or national rules. Check the council and the official register. A landing page is not a licence. Do not list a regulated service on the CV you have not been allowed to sell.

How do you test a small business idea before you resign?

Sell one small job with a written scope while you still have a wage, if the contract allows it. If the contract forbids it, do not secretly trade. A weekend of unpaid “branding” is not a test. A paid invoice is a test. Resign after you know someone will pay, or after you accept the risk in writing to yourself.

A one-page test: who the buyer is, what “done” means, the price, the hours, what you will not do. Then deliver. If you cannot find one buyer in a month of honest asking, the idea is not ready. That is a useful result. It is cheaper than a resignation letter you regret.

When you do resign, keep the letter boring: resignation letter templates.

What should a self-employed CV look like?

Same rules as an employed CV: dates, a true title, extractable text, two or three bullets with scope. “Founder” of a logo is not evidence. “Sole trader providing X to Y clients” is evidence if Y is real. Do not invent turnover. Do not hide the employed history that paid the rent.

If the business is new, the CV may still lead with the last employed role and treat trading as a short section. If trading is the whole story, lead with it and keep the old jobs as proof of the skill. Layout: Classic or Professional. Sidebar templates stay medium ATS risk.

Gaps while you tested an idea: employment gaps.

What costs and registrations does a UK small business usually need?

Time, insurance, tools, and tax records. Many sole traders register for Self Assessment. VAT, PAYE and limited-company filings depend on thresholds and choices we will not pick for you. Look up the live GOV.UK pages. A CV site that prints a threshold from memory is a defect.

Budget a buffer for slow payers. Budget for the laptop you already use only if you can replace it. Do not count a “brand identity” subscription as progress. The first asset is a delivered job and a record of the invoice.

Which small business ideas should you skip?

Skip ideas that need capital you do not have, a licence you will not get this year, or a market you cannot name. Skip anything that requires you to lie on a CV or to a lender. Skip “passive income” that is someone else’s course. Skip this page’s list if you already have a buyer and a scope — go and invoice.

  • Multi-level marketing dressed as entrepreneurship.
  • Copying a Shopify store you cannot supply.
  • Giving financial or legal advice you are not authorised to give.
  • A café, nursery or clinic because a podcast said “follow your passion”.

If you stay employed, you still need a tailored file: CV builder.

How do cover letters change if you go independent?

A letter to a recruiter is still why this vacancy and two proofs. A note to a client is a proposal: scope, price, date. Do not send a job-application cover letter to a buyer. Do not send a proposal to NHS Jobs. Wrong artefact, wrong reader.

Employed samples: cover letter examples. If an interviewer asks why you left, answer with a fact, not a pitch deck. Weakness questions are still about work, not about your brand: greatest weakness.

Can you keep a job and test a small business idea?

Yes if the contract allows it and you can deliver both without lying about hours. No if the contract bans other work or you would use the employer’s clients, tools or secrets. A side test is not a licence to take their book. Read the clause. If it is silent, still do not steal a client list.

When the test works, the resignation letter stays factual: resignation letter templates. When it fails, you still have a job and a CV that did not invent a CEO title.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best small business ideas in the UK?

The best small business idea is one you can deliver next month with skills, kit and buyers you can name. There is no honest national ranking on this page. A “best of 2026” list that ignores your licence, your town and your savings is marketing, not research.

Do I need a limited company for a small business idea?

Not always. Many people start as a sole trader and use GOV.UK to register for Self Assessment. A limited company adds filings and duties. We will not pick the structure for you. Read the official pages or an accountant. Do not invent a Ltd on the CV before it exists.

Should I resign before I start the small business?

Only if you can fund the gap and your contract allows the side work. A resignation letter is not a customer. Test demand while you still have a wage if the contract permits it. If it does not, do not secretly trade and then lie in the letter.

How do I put a small business on my CV?

Use a real trading name or “Self-employed [trade]”, month-and-year dates, and two or three bullets with scope: who paid, what you delivered, what you cannot yet claim. Do not list “CEO” of a dormant idea. Do not invent turnover.

Are these small business ideas guaranteed to make money?

No. Nothing on this page is a forecast. Ideas fail when there is no buyer, no time, or no licence. We would rather say that than publish a fake success rate. If a site promises a figure, treat it as advertising.

Can I list “entrepreneur” on my CV with no customers?

You can list the months you traded if you traded. You cannot list a job title that implies a company, a team or a turnover you do not have. “Exploring a business idea” is a gap label, not a role. Honesty is cheaper than a Companies House search that shows nothing.
